The Different Kinds of Baptism in the Bible
Hebrews 6:1,2 Therefore leaving the principles of the
doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the
foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying
on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
In the Bible, there are
different kinds of baptisms, and it is not only water.
1.
Baptism with the literal and physical
water performed by John the Baptist [Baptizer] for the nation of Israel. Read Matthew 3:11. Why did John baptize
Israel? To “manifest” the Messiah to Israel. (John 1:25-31). Also in Acts 13:24.
2.
Baptism of the Lord Jesus Christ for the
nation of Israel. The
Lord Jesus Christ baptized Israelites with the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:11). This
is what he promised to his 11 disciples in Acts 1:5 and fulfilled in Acts 2:4.
This is the giving of power by the Lord to them through the Holy Spirit’s power.
What happened in Acts 2 was just the fulfillment of Prophet Joel’s prophecy in
Joel 2, and it is only for the nation of Israel.
3.
Baptism of salvation and the giving of
power to the twelve apostles and to other disciples (Mark 16:14-20). This is only for the Israelite believers
and according to Paul n 1 Corinthians 13:8-10 it would cease. Because Jews
require signs (Exodus 4:2-9; 1 Corinth
1:22).
4.
Baptism of Washing of the Jews [Pharisees]
of their utensils such as plates on the table (Mark 7:3-4). The word washing here is “baptizo” in
Greek.
5. Baptism
of the death of the Lord Jesus Christ (Luke 12:50).
6.
Baptism of Fire or of Judgment. The Lord Jesus Christ would do this to
all the wicked on the Day of Judgment (Matthew 3:11-12; Revelation 20:11-15).
7.
Baptism In the Cloud Unto Moses (1 Corinth
10:1-2). It happened in Exodus 14:21-22. Mentioned in
Psalms 77:17-20.
8.
Baptism of the Believer into the Death of
Christ (Roma 6:3-5). Baptism
into the death of Christ and not into “literal” water!
9. Baptism
into Christ or Putting on Christ (Galatians 3:26-27).
10. Baptism
into the One and Spiritual Body of Christ, the Church (1 Corinth 12:13). Here, the Spirit of God is the Baptizer
and not any man or minister. It is the Spirit that baptizes or places every
believer into the One Body of Christ. Here, the believer is baptized or place
into the Body of Christ and not into water!
11. Spiritual
Circumcision (not made with hands),
burial and resurrection in baptism in Christ (Colossians 2:11-12).
12. One
Spiritual Baptism for every member of the Body of Christ during this present
Dispensation of the Grace of God, the World without end (Ephesians 4:5; 3:21).
